Me too. But it's always better to be cautious.

We're coming out with a version this week which can run offline without having to connect to the internet. That will let people use it offline and share the solution with others using Bluetooth which will help get it into more hands discreetly.

"Any text protected by a keyword can be decrypted without the keyword, I believe." - Not easily without a lot of processing power. Read more:

"Strong Cryptography refers to the use of robust encryption techniques, such as AES or Triple DES, to protect sensitive data from unauthorized access. It involves storing data in a secure manner, either by hashing or symmetric encryption, to prevent data breaches and ensure data confidentiality." - https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/computer-science/strong-cryptography

The attacker must go through the time-consuming exercise of cracking password hashes to obtain the actual credentials. Another clear benefit to hashing is that it eliminates the key management issues associated with encryption. To stay consistent with security best practices, ensure that the hashing algorithm of choice has not been determined mathematically susceptible to collisions, such as MD5 and SHA-1. Consult resources such as NIST (http://csrc.nist.gov/groups/ST/hash/policy.html) to find out the current set of hashing algorithms deemed acceptable for use by federal agencies.

Not sure we need to, just yet.

Both ends have to have the app?

No app needs to be downloaded. The sender and receiver only need a web browser from which they connect to the website https://www.makeitprivate.org/

It's best to use a VPN (virtual private network) so your location is hidden.

Once they've connected to the website for the first time, the encryption and decryption program is in their computer/phone memory and can be used offline.

Thank you for your conscientious and generous project outlined here for establishing defenses against the INDEFENSIBLE.

May I suggest that even before beginning such a rigorous regime, take a free-breathing moment to attempt grasping the larger view of what is happening beyond the purview of any particular "THEM" or Pynchonian "THEY".

My paradigm began a new shift when I stumbled onto Prof Shoshana Zuboff's BIG PICTURE book of a coupla-three years ago and that seemed to land with greater appreciation (measured by online invitations for Prof Zuboff to visit and consent to having her guest lectures and presentations posted to various useful educational web sites).

Here are a couple of such online postings of Zuboff talks\seminars in the wake of her speaking tour after publishing this noteworthy paradigm shifter:

"A live-streamed discussion about "the unprecedented form of power called 'surveillance capitalism' and the quest by corporations to predict and control our behavior" featuring Naomi Klein, a senior correspondent for The Intercept, and Harvard Business School professor emerita Shoshana Zuboff is planned for Friday evening.

"The conversation is set to begin at 7pm ET. Hosted by The Intercept on Facebook Live and YouTube, the discussion follows the January release of Zuboff's latest book, entitled The Age of Surveillance Capitalism: The Fight for a Human Future at the New Frontier of Power...."

"Harvard professor Shoshana Zuboff wrote a monumental book about the new economic order that is alarming. "The Age of Surveillance Capitalism," reveals how the biggest tech companies deal with our data. How do we regain control of our data? What is surveillance capitalism?

"In this documentary, Zuboff takes the lid off Google and Facebook and reveals a merciless form of capitalism in which no natural resources, but the citizen itself, serves as a raw material. How can citizens regain control of their data?

"It is 2000, and the dot.com crisis has caused deep wounds. How will startup Google survive the bursting of the internet bubble? Founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin don't know anymore how to turn the tide. By chance, Google discovers that the "residual data" that people leave behind in their searches on the internet is very precious and tradable.

"This residual data can be used to predict the behavior of the internet user. Internet advertisements can, therefore, be used in a very targeted and effective way. A completely new business model is born: "surveillance capitalism."
